In the footsteps of Dr. Tibor Buzády in Scandinavia - Part 1

The name of Dr. Tibor Buzády (1934-2021) often comes up in the Scandinavian Kuvasz community. During my trip to Sweden, people still knew about the revolutionary of 1956, the dog-friendly modern-day polymath, and remembered him with great respect.
I already knew that he wrote the book titled Hungarian dogs, published in Hungarian, German and English. I also knew that in 1971 he founded the Association of Hungarian Dog Breeders in Sweden, thereby laying the foundation for the spreading of the reputation of Hungarian breeds in the northern states.
At the same time, perhaps few people know what he did for Hungarians and the world in addition to his activities as a Kuvasz fan. His public and cultural activities were so numerous and effective that their presentation would stretch the scope of this article. To highlight just a few moments, he rescued the notes of Karinthy's brain surgery from the Karolina Institute in Stockholm, and wrote a professional study on them as a doctor. He also wrote the first Chinese-Hungarian mini-dictionary. In Salgótarján, his foundation built a roof for the St. Lázár chapel. Within the framework of his Catholic medical missionary activity, he helped the Hungarians of the Carpathian Basin with a donation of 816 trucks.
In recognition of his merits, he received a hereditary noble rank from the Queen of England, Pope Johann Paul II. inaugurated him as a member of the Order of St. Gregory the Great, and at home he received, among other things, the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic.
After being forced to leave Hungary in 1956 due to his revolutionary activities, after spending some time in Austria and England, he settled in Sweden where he practiced as a doctor. He returned home to Hungary as soon as he could. Those who met him both in Hungary and in Sweden, considered the Doctor to be a modest person. His Kuvaszok still live today in the memory of the breed's devotees.
After the World Dog Show was held in Budapest in 1972, the popularity of Hungarian dog breeds started booming, along with the demand. The kuvasz of the Gyapjús Kennel formed the backbone of Hungarian kuvasz breeding, and you could only get access to kuvasz with good connections and in exchange for currency. This was the period when kuvaz was considered a status symbol due to its rarity and difficulty in obtaining it.
The first Kuvasz imported to Sweden in 1971 was Pecelői Bojtár Csipke, the offspring of the famous Gyapjús Morcos and Anikó Ajnár Kunvári.
Csipke was followed by Budagyöngye Bihar in 1972. Bihar was a descendant of Fogas von Schwabensee and Ipoly Betti, the half-sister of Budagyöngye Opal, who was one of the founding dogs of Canadian/American Kuvasz breeding. The first Kuvasz to win the title of Champion in both the United States and Canada.
The third Kuvasz imported to Sweden by Dr. Buzády is Sárospataki Andul.
Bjorn Olaf Anderson, the owner of the Fjelflokken Kuvasz Kennel and board member of the Norwegian and Swedish breed club, proudly remembers how in 2010 he received the best handler title from Dr. Buzády.
Based on the data issued by the Swedish Kuvasz Club, thanks to the work of the Doctor, the number of Kuvaszok has steadily increased during that period. They Scandinavians received a lot of support and valuable information from the Hungarian expert.
From a 1956 revolutionary, Dr. Tibor Buzády turned into a world citizen. He was a dedicated Kuvasz fan but above all he was a Hungarian rising to the heights of the heroes of 1848. He served his country his entire life.
